Elsenham is very close to Stansted Airport but we are very fortunate in that being to one side of the runway we are not under any of the regular flight paths. The result can be a bit odd in that while we see the planes we don't hear much of them compared with villages much further away but under the regular routes.
The village is quite small and is growing with a steady progression of new housing developments, ours is still referred to by the 'locals' as the 'new’ houses but its been built over 17 years. We have a cluster of shops including a post office, a garage, one pub and a light industrial estate.
To get to the village from the south come up the M11 to the airport turnoff then follow all the signs to the airport. Just as you approach the main terminal building you will see the huge control tower on your left and just as the terminal building comes into sight in front of you, you come to a roundabout. Go almost all the way round it till you see a very small exit which leads within yards to a mini-roundabout. Turn left and follow the twisty rural road until you eventually reach a tee junction with the Crown pub dead ahead. Turn left this is Elsenham.
More local folk will approach from Bishops Stortford up the A1184 into Stansted Mountfitchet. Turn right into Chapel Hill B1051 (look for a large mock Tudor house on right corner). Go to bottom of hill then turn left, look for fork and take right (traffic lights). Follow till double roundabout, this is Elsenham.
From the north drive through Stansted Mountfitchet but look for a triangular island on the left with a cast iron drinking fountain and turn left. This is Chapel Hill see above. If you see the Mock Tudor house this way you've passed Chapel Hill, keep going there is a roundabout not far away to double back on.
From the East all traffic is funnelled through the village just look for the Crown on your right and you're in the village.
e-mail me before you set out to come and give me an idea as to what you are interested in if you prefer give me your phone number. I'll then give you final directions and tell you when what you want will be available. Don't just turn up, all one man businesses have this problem, there is only the workshop, we have no shop and access is strictly by appointment.
