A bit smaller and made from the log seasoned in the round. This gives plenty of the creamy sap wood to contrast against the vivid orange of the heartwood.
In Yew the sapwood is tough and springy while the heartwood is hard and brittle. To make a traditional English longbow cut the stave to be half and half then put the sapwood on the stretch side of the bend. The result is the same as a modern laminated bow.
